I've made up my mind. There's no going back now. I'm in love with Tomo.

—Junichirou Kubota, Chapter 841

Junichirou Kubota (久保田 淳一郎, Kubota Jun'ichirō?) is the deuteragonist of Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko!. He is the handsome childhood friend whom Tomo Aizawa is in love with. However, he only sees her as one of the boys, much to Tomo's frustration.

Appearance[]

Jun is a very tall and handsome young man with black hair (brown hair in the anime) that has bangs hanging on either side and black eyes (brown eyes in the anime). He is also quite big and muscular for his age, stronger than most grown men.

While wearing his school uniform, he is usually disheveled with his shirt untucked and his tie loose.

Personality[]

When Jun is around Tomo Aizawa, he is playful, slightly aggressive and somewhat clingy toward her that Misuzu Gundou remarks that he only really smiles when he's around Tomo.

However, when he's without Tomo, according to Misuzu [2], Junichirou comes off as cool and aloof to the rest of the school's population (which makes him popular among girls). He rarely smiles and seems to be easily bored.

But deep down he is a good guy but doesn't show it much. This shows that he's calm, collected, strong, serious, relaxed, short tempered and nice

Background[]

Jun and Tomo Aizawa are neighbors and friends since they were little. During elementary school, he attended a different school, so he wasn't aware of Tomo being a girl until they entered Middle school and saw her with the girl's uniform, but he sometimes seems to forget about this detail.

Plot[]

Tomo Aizawa has a crush on Jun, but he initially doesn't seem to notice her feelings. Later in the series, he starts to develop feelings for her and he eventually starts dating her by the end of the series after defeating her father Gorou Aizawa in a Karate fight.

Relationships[]

Tomo Aizawa[]

Jun used to treat Tomo like a guy, as he didn't even know she was a girl until they went to the same middle school together. He enjoys spending time with Tomo and considers her his best friend. When they fight, they don't hold back and always use their full strength against each other.

Regarding Tomo, he seems oblivious to her feelings for him, but shortly after the school's cultural festival, he looks at Tomo as a girl and appears to have developed the same feelings for her.

Misuzu Gundou[]

Jun and Misuzu do not get along at all where they went out together in their second year of middle school, but they could only stand three days of each other before they broke up and they've been bitter towards each other ever since.

Etymology[]

  • The name Junichirou means "pure" (淳) (jun), "one" (一) (ichi) and "son" (郎) (rou).
  • Junichirou's surname Kubota means "long time" (久) (ku), "protect/protection, maintain, guarantee" (保) (ho/bo) and "field, rice paddy" (田) (ta).

Trivia[]

  • Jun has three nicknames from three different people:
    • Gorou Aizawa and Akemi Aizawa refer to him as "Jun-bo"/"Jun-boy".
    • Tatsumi Tanabe often refers to him as "Kubo-Jun".
    • When he was younger, he used to be called "Game Boy" by Tomo Aizawa, which he doesn't remember fondly since it was for teasing him about how he was far less strong-headed and physically able.
  • Jun was not aware that Tomo was a girl until middle school.
  • During the midterm exams, Jun placed 54th on the leaderboard.[3]
  • Misuzu Gundou teases Jun about his height, calling him things like "Giant Deadwood".
    • Misuzu is the only one who calls him by his first name Junichirou instead of his nickname Jun. It's not mutual as Jun calls her Gundou. This indicates that Misuzu is not calling him Junichirou out of friendship, but rather, to belittle him; however, it's later implied that it turns into an Insult of Endearment.
    • Jun was only allowed to call her by her first name when they were dating, but after that crumbles down, Misuzu doesn't allow him to do so anymore.
  • During Jun's middle school years, his eyebrows were quite thick and they seemed to have gotten slightly thinner by the time he was in high school.
